about

This song was regularly played in our bluegrass jam at Hart Cafe in Murray, Kentucky from 2009-2013. In the final year, we self-recorded our favorite tracks in studio. I am especially proud of our arrangement in Steam Powered Aeroplane, in which the banjo, harmonica, and mandolin melodies dance around one another.

lyrics

Well I dreamt I went away on a steam powered aeroplane
I went and I stayed and I damn near didn’t come back again
I didn’t go very fast on a steam powered aeroplane
The wheel went around up and down inside and then back again

Now I’m sittin’ on a 747 just watchin those clouds go by,
And I can’t tell if it’s sunshine or if it’s rain
I’d rather be sittin’ in a deck chair high up over Kansas City
In a genuine, old-fashioned, authentic steam powered airplane

Well I dreamt I was a pilot on a steam powered aeroplane
I’d turn that pilot wheel around and then back again
And I’d wear a blue hat, yeah, that says “Steam powered aeroplane”
With the letters goin’ round the brim and then back again

Now I’m sittin’ on a 747 just watchin those clouds go by,
And I can’t tell if it’s sunshine or if it’s rain
I’d rather be sittin’ in a deck chair high up over Kansas City
In a genuine, old-fashioned, authentic steam powered airplane

Now I’m sittin’ on a 747 just watchin those clouds go by,
And I can’t tell if it’s sunshine or if it’s rain
I’d rather be sittin’ in a deck chair high up over Kansas City
In a genuine, old-fashioned, authentic steam powered airplane

Kirk Lee Philadelphia, Pennsylvania

Kirk Lee was grown in the nutrient-rich soils of the Cumberland Valley, and slow-roasted on the banks of the Tennessee River among banjos and fiddles. His acoustic flavor emboldens an essence of folk-inspired Americana, steeped in a sound backdrop of rock and pop. Kirk moved to Philadelphia in 2014, started a family, and has worked hard refining his songwriting in between his full-time work. ... more
